What are you doing as far managing the 12v supply? I've been looking
at
the National LM2588, but it needs a custom transformer (???)
Have a look at there webench app, it will "design" a regulator
for you, give
it a Vin range and a desired Vout/Iout and it does the rest.
I have a Via Eden 800 in a Cubid case waiting for me to finish the PSU
&
stick it in the car.
