OT again: Houses again (last time ... I promise)

One thing I forgot to mention last time was that with the lack of 
suitable houses, one thing we are looking at is buying a brand new 
house, they are in our price range, out of the citry & near the 
motorway.

One problem, there is a 18 month lead time on most ones we've seen!!!

Are there any alternatives to long term renting that I might not 
have thought of? bearing in mind we have a dog ...
