Tsunami Threat for Quake-struck Manchester

Residents of Manchester are been warned to protect themselves from
potentially devastating killer waves.

Tsunami, pronounced tsoo-nah-mee, are very large water waves, typically
generated by seismic activity, that have historically caused significant
damage to coastal communities throughout the world.

Experts fear the current earthquake swarm which has affected the area
could trigger the world's first city-centre Tsunami.

Manchester, which is situated some 35 miles inland, is connected to the
ocean by the Manchester Ship Canal, arguably the greatest engineering
project of Victorian times.

The canal, opened in 1894, was created by far-sighted businessmen to
circumvent the high port fees Liverpool was charging. The impact of the
canal on Liverpool has been a source of resentment to Liverpudlians ever
since.

One-hundred and eight years later however, it seems the Scousers may yet
have the last laugh.

"It seems the far-sighted businessmen were not as far-sighted or as
clever as they thought", claimed a leading Seismologist from Liverpool's
Littlewood's Pools University.

The epicenter of the earthquake swarm is in Beswick, site of the
Manchester 2002 Commonwealth Games stadium and just one mile from the
city centre.

The stadium is built on the banks of the Ashton Canal which, through a
cruel twist of fate, is linked to Manchester city centre via the
Bridgewater Canal. The Bridgewater Canal, also through a cruel twist of
fate, is linked to the Ship Canal. This, scientists say, is the key to
the potential washout.

Manchester City Council have sent a press release to their in-tray,
warning residents not to panic and offering survival tips. Citizens have
been told that in event of disaster striking they should move to higher
ground, suggestions include Oldham or one of the vacant high-rise flats
in Blackey's Riverdale estate.

Councillor Ken Franklin, Manchester City Council's executive member with
responsibility for Fountains and Water Features, warned people to take
this risk very seriously.

"Manchester", he warned, "is surrounded by a network of water ways. Even
if you think you are safe, it's possible there is a canal route or a
fountain nearby. The last thing we need are casualties on our hands. To
help prevent that I am delighted to announce we are offering half-price
swimming lessons at all council-run swimming pools throughout the month
of November."

this knowledge with your relatives and friends. It could save their
lives!
