John Carmack Of Doom And Quake Fame Joins Space Race
Armadillo Aerospace, a company organized by John Carmack, who is the
co-founder of Id Software and the programmer behind such popular
computer
game titles as Doom and Quake, has announced its entry into the X-Prize
competition.
Armadillo joined 20 other companies in their effort to get $10 million
in
prize money. To win the prize, the team must build a space vehicle
which
will take 3 passengers 100Km high twice within 2 weeks.
X-Prize Foundation set the deadline for the competition for January 1,
2005.
The Foundation was founded with hopes of promoting private space travel.
A
market study suggests that by 2021 the demand for suborbital space
travel
will reach $1 billion.
