Hi Mark
                If its a basic serial cable it should be something like
this...


DB9                            DB9

PIN 2     connected to   PIN 3

PIN 3     connected to   PIN 2

PIN 5      connected to  PIN 5

No hardware hand shaking in the above if it doesnt communicate try swapping
2 + 3

pin 5 is ground on a db9
