Re: Satellite Broadband Providers-recommendations?

Be very careful, a friend just had btopenworld sat installed and has got it removed.  It was the single user version you cannot use normal firewalls etc on it as it breaks it.  If you have two network cards in the machine it fails to work.

Also you cannot use linux to share the connection, not sure whether the 5 user etc products work properly but certainly his experance was not good.

The only way to share the connection was run WinProxy on it even then that was flakey.

Kind Regards,

Subject: [ukha_d] Satellite Broadband Providers-recommendations?

Hi,

I知 fairly certain that I知 going to opt for 2way satellite broadband for my home/office (out of xDSL range/exchange rollout).  It痴 not for gaming or peering apps.

Anyone got any real recommendations for ISPs? (Failing that BTopenworld would be the default ISP?)

Is there any easy plug地恥lay software solutions (using broadband) for HA? (I知 not particularly interested in developing Linux or my own software apps)

 - Comfort controlled external door entry into porch, with a webcam server (for all those couriers who always deliver when I知 out! And need signatures)

 - Comfort or HomeVision event notification (e.g. SMS to mobile/email to me whilst out, and remote control of Comfort/HomeVision/X10)

 - webcam server

 - remote VPN access to my servers

 - any other suggestions would be welcomed

James
