This debate has been had before time and again, over and over and the
simple truth is that for all the complaints about Yahoo there is no
viable alternative to the services offered. Some people want web based,
some want email and it always seems that if you are prepared to use one
you either vehemently dislike or refuse to use the other!
Yahoo is the only option we have at the moment to have the features and
options that we do currently and whilst I acknowledge that there may
well be other means out there, none seem to offer what Yahoo does for
no
cost. IIRC, we held a poll on this a long time ago and there was
practically no interest in members donating to the cost of developing
and running a private list, so there you have it.
If you have any suggestions or alternatives to Yahoo's service that are
fully operational and working I'm sure everyone would be interested in
seeing it.
Now, a lot of measures have been put in place over the recent months to
address many of the concerns that people voiced about Yahoo, the
addition of the moderators and the change to plain text mail/chopping
of
attachments being the ones that spring immediately to mind. This may
not
address all the concerns but I consider it an improvement and we have
had a lot less moaning about Yahoo's service and the list in general
since they were implemented.
Yes, mail is sometimes slow, so what? UKHA mail is hardly life or
death,
it's not crucial to life on the planet although sometimes you would
think so the way that Yahoo is attacked. It all goes back to the old
adage "you can't please all the people all the time"!
Even after all that, every service will suffer from downtime and/or
hiccups for whatever reason at some point so I think it is grossly
unfair to have a go at Yahoo for the odd blip we get in the service,
especially given that it is a free service. I realise that some peoples
have experienced protracted delays in receiving mail but it is only a
temporary situation I'm sure and, yes, it has happened to me as well!
In short, for what we get based on what we pay then I would have to say
that Yahoo is a superb service.
