Thanks Keith.
I thought that I have no chance, but I'll try to borrow STB from someone and
give it a try. I am pretty high on the 4th floor, if that means anything.
Cheers,
Nik

  Hi Nik

That doesnt sound like a "true" cable feed.

It sounds more like a bog standard SMATV system (Satellite Master Antenna
  TeleVision)

The "extra" channels you are getting are all free to air satellite
channels
so my guess is that there is a single TV aerial on the roof and a
satellite
dish feeding a bank of satellite receivers which are in the RF
loopthrough.

Because the FreeView Digital channels actually use the Taboo channels that
are rendered useless by the 5 terrestrial ones they would find it
extremely
difficult and expensive to actually block them. I bet the digital signals
  are getting through OK.

I think you will find that if you can borrow a box it will work fine :-)

  Keith,
My only feed is from a cable supplier (Sentryscan). I'm living in a block
of
buildings managed by managing agency and acording to our leasehold
agreement
we are not allowed to put any aerials or dishes and that's why they supply
the signal through the cable (and we pay for it through service charge).
We
don't have settop boxes, chanels are already modulated in the 75 Ohm
  coaxial.
  We are getting these channels:
  23    ITV
  26    BBC1
  30    CH4
  33    BBC2
  37    CH5
  50    TCM (Turner Classic Movies)
  52    BBC Choice
  54    Sky News
  56    CNN
  58    Al Jazeera
  69    CCTV (Chinese Channel)

So it seems like mix of communal terrestrial with some extra channels
added
in. I can try to tune to those, but I reckon, that they filtered out
everything except their channels, to avoid interference.
  I'll try tonight.

  Cheers,
  Nik

    Hi Nik,

Is your only TV feed from a cable supplier or is there a communal
terrestrial aerial feed as well. ?

What UHF channels numbers do you receive the 5 terrestrial channels
    on ?

    If its

    BBC1 26
    BBC2 33
    ITV 23
    CH4 30
    CH5 37

then they are coming from the terrestrial channels on Crystal Palace

Try tuning into 22,25,28,29,32,34 to see if you get funny way lines
and block on the screen. If you do you are picking up the digital
signals from Crystal palace and there is a good chance that an
onDodgy box would work. you then need to borrow one froma freindly
London based UKHA'er to check the reception before parting with your
    dosh.
