OT: hiss on amp channel

I've moved in to a house which will be nice when its finished (thanks
Phil!). I've just calibrated the home cinema, and I'm getting hiss on
the left rear (fed by a stereo power amp), even when the pre-amp is
turned off. Removing the phono plug which carries the incoming signal
but leaving the speaker cables connected make the hiss much worse. Does
my amp need repairing, or is the problem likely to lie elsewhere?
