Mike,

I don't pretend to be technical enough to understand the engineering
implications of things like:

- The impact of Jitter
- EMF from video circuitry
- Cubic-spline interpolation of upsampling

I am aware, however, from talking to audio hardware designers (I too was a
recording engineer back in the early 90s...) that it's NOT as simple as
saying that "this is bit-perfect".


I stand by my view that, having listened to the players in a variety of
different systems, and with a variety of different recordings, the Linn
Sondek CD12 is the best source for music replay I have ever heard.

I have no doubt that DVD players WILL end up better (they have a better
native resolution) - I've just not heard any that are there yet.

Linn Sondek DVD12, anyone? :-)

There may be other reasons why perhaps you might have a personal
preference for the CD12 but I have great difficulty in believing that
that is actually because the Meridian 800 is capable of playing DVD's.

The 800 is effectively a specialised digital computer.  It uses a
standard ATAPI/IDE DVD-ROM drive, just like the one you might install
in a personal computer and, when the disc permits, will transcribe
bit perfect data from the disc you place in the drawer regardless of
the fact that data is on an audio CD in the same way that your
computer is capable of loading bit-perfect data from a CD that is
placed in its DVD-ROM drive.  The 800 will then and apply the
digital
signal processing appropriate for audio CD's, not the processing
applicable to DVD's, so the fact that it is also a DVD player is
effectively irrelevant when it is used for playing CD's.

Unfortunately I don't have a fairy godfather or godmother but if I
did I'd choose the Meridian 800 integrated with the 861 (for surround
sound processing for films) and the active DSP speakers as I consider
that it's the best domestic system I've ever heard for playing music
and has the advantage of great flexibility including integration
possibilities - useful in an automated home - and the ability to
handle an increasingly wide range of media formats.
