Ah, you have a highpoint raid controller.

That will be the problem. Use the chipset ATA channels and the problem
will go away. Probly when running 98 it was not able to hammer the disk
as much.

Also, try moving the nic in the desktop to another slot. It may be
sharing the physical IRQ with the highpoint controller.
