RE: THX and music replay...

Tim,

Would you advise that a prospective purchaser to:

1: Trust THEIR ears?

or

2: Reject THX out of hand because it is fundamentally flawed, and restric their listening to non-THX devices?

I'd ask people to do what you and I did, and choose based on listening without pre-judging something as bad.

M.

Actually Mark I'm with Phil on this one, although I do have a similar
overpriced digital pre-amp to yours, I have yet to hear a set of THX
*speakers* which sound acceptable when playing music, because by
definition they have narrow bandwidth and dispersion pattern. THX
re-equalisation is good but from what I've heard Yamaha's roll your own
version does just as good a job.

When you brought the milk monster round we really didn't have time to
listen to my set-up in detail. Everyone who has heard my system likes
it, none of the (six) power amps have a THX badge on them nor do the
speakers, nor does the DVD player or screen. I HAVE to have a hybrid
system, and I wouldn't buy THX speakers (because they do sound pants
with music). I wouldn't out of choice buy anything else with a THX badge
on it per-se (the Meridian was a different matter when I bought it,
because anything comparable had a THX badge on it), purely because it
adds several hundred quid to the price, and I trust my own ears more
than a set of arbitrary specs!

Tim.
