Have you looked at the event log?

I apologise if you have already.. I know xp can crash hard enough to
not
make any entries, but its a good place to start..

To better understand, you have upgraded the notebook to XP but the
server is freezing?
Have you changed something in the server configuration after the

  I've got a simple network at home connecting the main server (XP
Pro)
(which
  connected to the internet), a laptop and a Rio.  All was

  the laptop got upgraded to XP from W98.  Now everything still
