It sounds like he's got a Vodafone SIM card. IIRC, It's only vodafone
that
displays these annoying little messages (How are you? is their latest
marketing slogan, as i'm sure you're aware) and iirc there's no way to
disable them. Might be able to bugger about with the SIM card directly,
but you'd need a sim reader/writer for that.
Think he may just have to love with it :(
