Amar, how big is 1hour file in VCD format? or any similar, playable format.
ReplayTV was marketing that you can record your show and send it to your
friend over ADSL.
Thay would be perfect if friend in States can send me NBA game (without
comercials and time outs), over ADSL. I cannot see them here.
I would be able to send him cricket games then, but I am not sure that there
is anyone interested in that there ;-).

you tivo guys are hard line bunch aren't you ?

i am not archiving but welcome the opportunity of being portable.
i can record a show - and watch it when and where i can.
be that on my laptop on a plane, be that at a friends house.
i can master onto dvd or svcd, vcd or hell even vhs whatever takes my fancy
and largely depending on the what i want to watch.
that suits me fine.
>From what i am hearing with tivo you don't have this
and from what someone mentioned about law suits in the usa, you never will.

Yes, but only if the DVD player actually supports that, which older and
cheaper ones do not therefore negating the whole point of doing it as almost
every home has a VHS! So for recording something for someone could be a very
hit & miss affair if you archive them off to VCD.

So what you are really doing is archiving for your own needs which is
entirely different to doing it for a neighbour or a friend as you have the
facilities to use that technology right now, most “normal” people do not
have that facility or don’t know and don’t care if they have. Whereas my
plan is to get a way to archive off to DVD, but then I really want 5.1
surround too, which I cannot get from any off-air transmissions for now and
AFAIK, Sky will only broadcast certain stuff in 5.1 before anyone goes
there. Needless to say the stuff I want will not be in 5.1…known as Sod’s
Law!

But then, I can’t seem to find the time to watch any more than a few hours
TV a week so having a huge archive of off-air stuff is of little use to me
other than very specific programming.

In any case, who has the time for that nonsense of encoding it to a VCD
anyway? ;-)

K.

why would you want to watch vcd on a pc
when you can play it in a dvd player and watch on your tv :-)
