i have no problem with the pic quality. you options
of compression rates.
it suits me fine as it all fits well into my automation setup.
I am trying to centralise as much as possible.
and i just don't want another gadget when my pc can take
of the task without upseting performance. When i was recording a programme
last night, homeseer and outlook and winfax pro was running on the same machine
and i had no problems, crashes or dropped frames.
Showshifter with did guide does all that i want and fits my requirements of recording programs
that  i want to watch when i am out or busy
It has not crashed on me once, and i have not had to reboot.
So that is good enough for me.

      Amar,
      What's the picture quality?
I also have spare Pentium III 500 sitting around, which I planned to sell. I already have Hauppauge WinTVGo TV tuner card. I also have ATI based VGA with TV out (Super something - forgot the brand). I also have DigiGuide subscription which costed me £5/year compared to £120 on TiVo or £200 for box life.
If I hack TiVo with TurboNet (extra £50), I'lll break my warranty and if something goes wrong, my subscription is gone too.
So, from my point of wiev, ShowShifter has many advantages, but againg I would like to know about picture quality? Mark?
My SWMBO knows how to use DigiGuide, so that's not an issue either.
So, I'm just waiting for you TiVo lovers to give me reasons :-).
      Nik

yes but mark tell us why.
i used showshifter yesterday for the first time
i used it with digi guide. it was a breeze.
i also installed the web browser plugin
and now i can set programmes to record from anywhere.

I think I'm qualfied to answer this, I built a PC just to use for SS and ran it for months.  However, as has been well documented by a certain Scotish bloke, I'm afraid there is simple no comparrison between the two systems.  TiVo every time.

                        I am considering buying TiVo.
However, I discovered Showshifter recently. Now I would like to compare those two products:
