OT CPU Underclocking

Late night stupid question time, I have somehow managed to kill a 
Celeron 466 processor this evening and looking for a replacement have 
settled on a 1GHz Celeron (non Tualatin) for monetary reasons. The 
Gigabyte board (Old BX2000+) only explicitly supports up to 850MHz 
can I just run the CPU at a lower multiplier i.e. 8.5 or will this 
board be stable enough at 1GHz??

Any thoughts before I go shopping?
