According to the references in

http://www.dtg.org.uk/dtgactivities/published/connection_guidelines.pdf

(which is an interesting document in itself) the communication
protocol is a European Standard:

Domestic and similar electronic equipment interconnection requirements.
AV.link - Part 1, Part 2-1, Part 2-2 and Part 2-3.
EN 50157-1, EN 50157-2-1, EN 50157-2-2, EN 50157-2-3, Cenelec.

The bad news is that these standards documents cost a lot of money
and (consequently) are unavailable on the web. If anyone knows
someone at one of the relevant manufacturers, they would presumably
have copies.
