Yes, but I think that it's different when you have TBs of space for storing movies at home and reading one at a time and having hundreds of web sites and files being accessed at the same time. Eventually, that network connection between storage space and server that controls it will become bottleneck. In that architecture, that network connection will be shared between all controllers, while when you have RAQ3s each server accesses it's own data.

Yeah well put it this way Mark - You've probably seen Sun Cobalt Raq3's/Raq4's that retail at about 1500 new (bout 500 second hand).  They run about 450mhz, the cobalts are designed for about 100-300 sites on one box.

If you put a Via EPIA 800 in a 1u case and add some memory and a harddrive for under 500 you can have a box that out performs the Cobalts in everyway possible!  There's plenty of opensource control panels apart from webmin out there too :)

Eek - I was thinking the same....

Hmmm.... single box running all the storage....

Bunch of Via boards in a single case running the applications....

Wow ... Excellent, just what I needed. I have come to the same conclusion as matthew that I need to separate out my storage requirements into a single box. Toyed with Linux in the past but the webmin interface just brings it all together. Had my 1st samba share set up in 5 mins!!

Cheers

Don

I'd try redhat and just do a custom install - there is no reason not to have X on there whatsoever, failing that debian would work nice.

Also you might want to try http://www.webmin.com very nice for serveradmin for newbies that don't know much about the config files (yet!!)

Kind Regards,

Subject: [ukha_d] Network attached storage

For a while now I've been toying with the idea of having a Network Attached Storage box hidden away somewhere on my LAN- to protect my data should anything happen to my main pc.  I've had servers in the past, but the hassle of having them on 24/7 or turning them on so I can get at my data has always been too much.

I've purchased a cyrix 180mhz set-top box machine from ebay for £21 (came with a 3.2 gig samsung that I then sold on ebay for £24!!!) and popped a 10 gig drive (just experimental) in it.

I've tried several configurations for this machine, all of which I'm not overly happy with.  My latest experiment is windows 98 lite to serve my lan, but I want a more elegant solution than that.

Before that I was using Red Hat 7.2 and Samba - but whenever I had to do any configuration on it I ended up having to run X which ran like a dog.  Even though it was a lower power machine - a 10 meg mp3 file copied accross my lan in about 2 seconds - enough for me.

What I would like is a light weight linux distro that just had samba and swat (web administration of samba) Idealy a web linux admin tool on it as well, so it really performed just like the commercial NAS storage like the snapservers.  I'm sure that linux MUST be the best way of doing this - but I'm completely out of my depth with it.   And I just want the samba stuff - without all the other linux stuff to confuse myself with.

Can anyone point me in a direction of a linux distro that just does NAS?

Ta!

Matthew
