RE: grrrrr.....

Hmmm... been thinking about this, and I think there are 3 points worth maki= ng:

1: According to the stats, about 90% of domestic internet traffic for the U= K on the average day could be stored within a few terabytes of data... and = is accessed by hundreds of different users.

I'm guessing that the same is true for Italy. If anything, I'm guessing it'= d be even more skewed because of the tendancy of web surfers to polarise ar= ound web content in their native language.

Today's technology allows the building of terabyte-capacity, caching, trans= parant proxy servers at prices available to the average ASP.

2: As the base bandwidth goes up, the capability of the network to support = higher contention ratios goes up. This is for the simple reason that most a= ccess is still for information that can be parsed by the human live, and re= alistically that still means static text+graphics, from a content availabil= ity perspective if nothing else.

3: This is NOT generic internet access, where the biggest commercial bottle= neck to broadband is the provision of an appropriate local loop infrastruct= ure. It was noticeable that the service was only available in metropolitan = areas, and at that, areas characterised by large zones of apartment develop= ment. My guess is that the ISP is actually effectively wiring streets at a = time directly with CAT5, by the simple expedient of running it along apartm= ent blocks.

So, in summary:

5 years and 10 Mb/sec for every user would be possible.

10Mb/sec for every metropolitan user, based on the majority of the requirem= ent falling in line with current domestic surfing patterns - that strikes m= e as viable now.

Regards,

Mark

I think you have missed the point, so I will attempt to explain.

Ethernet to deliver broadband services is not a new idea and I never
suggested that it couldn't be done. I pointed out two things. One,
Ethernet does not mean 10 Mb/sec and that the service would be
unreliable.

Take UUNet, who operate one of the biggest backbones in the UK if not
the world. Between Europe and the USA, UUNet have two 2.5 Gbps lines.
Imagine if every broadband user in UK, of which there are 200,000, had
10 Mb/sec of bandwidth. Even operating at contention ratios of 100:1
(which is way too high), you would need just under 20 Gbps of bandwidth.
Give it 5 years, and 10 Mb/sec for every broadband user would be
possible. Until then, not a chance in hell.

But of course, you knew that, right?

Oh, and thanks for putting the link with \\ instead of //. You managed
to copy The Register article with // but the link for me had \\. Ho ho,
that really made me laugh.
