The Ethernet port is for broadband connection for multiplayer gaming over
the internet.
MS should be rolling this out later in the year, though there is a (linux!)
workaround
out now you can use to play with your mates around the world.

As the machine is basically a PC, I don't see why it _couldn't_ be used for
HA purposes, though I doubt any developers are working on it, as the Xbox
is
aimed at the gaming market.
There have been various supposed leaks from Microshaft about the
'Homestation' which may be released this year/early next year - which is
basically an XBox but with added functionality to act as a home
entertainment 'hub' - ie tivo/dvd/gaming etc - so perhaps then you will see
HA stuff developed for this platform.
Of course, bung a large hard disk in a decent PC, get a DVD player, GEForce
4 graphics card, bung on show shifter & buy a copy of Counterstrike -
you
then have a home entertainment 'hub' that can be programmed for HA and that
runs the only game worth playing :-)
