It returns a "binary" string of 16 bits, where each bit
represents one of
the inputs. Reasonably enough, a "0" means off, and a
"1" is on... Although
it is represented as a binary code, it is of course just plain old ASCII
characters that are being sent...
It transmits the entire string on every status change, - i.e. on a button
depress, and again on a button release...
Much of this stuff is configurable in the VIOM, such as the termination
character and so on...
