Hello again,
This is a bit OT. The discussions on security have gotten me rethinking my
LAN
setup. I know only enough about networking to have gotten this setup
working.
Current setup:
Cable modem<-->gateway/Router (4 port switch)<-->WAP(also a
gateway/router/switch)
The gateway/router and WAP are connected using a CAT5 cable between 2 of
their
regular ports.
I've currently got six computers networked (2 Fuji's, homeseer/server, PIC
programmer, 2 General purpose). All are running Windoze98.
I'm currently running DHCP services on the gateway/router. Static IP's are
on
used on the cable modem, gateway/router, and WAP.
Do server computers (i.e. Homeseer) require a static IP address? Could I
implement a "local" domain name using Win98 and (free) software?
(i.e. type
http://homeseer.dougshouse on one
computer and get the homeseer web interface?)
I can currently see the Homeseer webpage on the LAN using the IP address
(192.168.0.7).
I tried to open port 80 on the gateway/router to allow homeseer out to the
internet, but grc.com still reported the port as stealth. The homeseer
computer
is physically plugged into the WAP--do I need to open port 80 on the WAP
too for
homeseer to get out? The configuration I have with two gateway/routers may
be a
bit unique. I had originally bought the WAP/gateway/router to replace my
existing gateway/router, but found the extra ports helpful with this setup.
Even more off-topic: Does anybody know why Netgear had me set up my
individual
IP configurations to use "netgear" 4.2.2.2 as the DNS server?
Where would it
have been looking for the DNS service before this was set? Netgear had me
do
this when my internet connection stopped working one day.
Thanks again for the help
