There are websites you can goto to check how exposed you are.
soz, can't remember addresses but I'm sure others on the list will know of
one.

I don't know anything about your router, so I don't know how to set it up/
You should have some sort of 'port forwarding' option on one of the menus
so
that you can open, say, port 80 to be routed to your internal webserver on
192.168.1.1 or whereever it lives on the lan.
Messenger etc can be messy because of the no of random ports they choose
