Ok,
The following IP ranges are know as non-routable IPs
10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255
172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255
192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255
The relevant RFC is RFC 1597, so what is exactly is so special about this
range of IP's
1) IP's within the groups listed above will never be assigned
2) IP's above will NOT route over the internet
Explanations
1) Take 143.210.xxx.xxx this is a class B network address and has support
for 65,000 hosts, for info 143.210. is allocated to the university Of
Leicester, there are only 16,000 class B addresses and at the last count
most were allocated.
2) Routers within the internet will deal with packets the pertain to come
>from
translation) allow the use of these ranges behind a router, with all
packets then appearing to come from the router.
Well thats the basics, no doubt if I've got bits wrong people will soon
correct me.
Cheers
Stuart
