You can almost hacksaw off the bits of PCB that are not required, patch up
the broken tracks, relocate a few components and use it that way.

Alternatively, you might get away with installing the IR-detector-in-a-can
part in the wall switch and extend the three wires (+, - and IR data) to
the body of the IR543 elsewhere.
