I had a similar monochrome picture when playing Region 1 (NTSC) DVDs.
Problem solved by either
a)setting DVD to RGB and using the RGB enabled scart or
b)upgrading to a NTSC compatible TV.

Interestingly, mine auto-detects RGB but feed it a composite signal when
S-Video is selected and you get a monochrome picture.
