Toshiba licence Tivo software

Lifted from Today's FT.com email, sorry if everybody has already seen
it!

Toshiba, the world's largest consumer electronics group, is licensing
technology from TiVo of the US in a deal which opens the door to low-
cost personal video recorders (PVRs) in a wide range of domestic
appliances.

Television set-top boxes for the reception of digital programmes, for
example, could be equipped with PVRs as a matter of course. In the UK
at present, only BSkyB markets an integrated set-top box and PVR.

TiVo pioneered the development of software which controls the way
television programmes can be recorded on high-capacity hard-disk
drives. The software makes possible, for example, instant replay,
simultaneous recording and playback of different programmes and
allows viewers to pause live programmes.

Toshiba intends to manufacture silicon chips incorporating TiVo
software. This should bring down the cost of the technology while
allowing third party manufacturers to incorporate PVR functionality
in their own devices. They will have to pay TiVo a licence fee to
incorporate the Toshiba chips in their equipment.

The value of the deal has not been disclosed. Jeffrey Klugman, who
manages licensing for TiVo, says he expects TiVo will continue to
derive most of its revenues from services; licensing fees will become
increasingly important, however.
