Stuart,
DTMF is a consideration but I really wanted to keep things as simple as
possible, not for me you understand but for the other occupants of the
house
(All Female) so wanted 1 unit to receive audio and announcements and keep
the
number of wires to a minimum. I guess (with our older ears) there
would be no
reason why I could not send something over say 16-20 KHz with a notch
filter in
the receiver and then do the switching based on the receipt of such a
signal.
Hmm,
Back to the drawing board.

Ok, but how about this,
Do you really need stereo ?
If not then how about using a say the left channel to carry a DTFM
code,
then put a DTFM decoder in each reciever to turn the amp on / off ? My
guess is that a DTFM reciever is less the
