OK, just to really make things complicated ;)

Would it be possible, you're gonna love this, to reverse the whole concept
and use it for zoned IR input :) obviously each zone would need a TSOP or
similar, but is there a simple way of using trannies to indicate which zone
is active and send the data on its way. Collisions seem to be the biggest
stumbling block to me :/

Obviously the LPT port would have to be bi-directional.

/me scurries off to see how many pins are available on an LPT port ;)
