I was not aware that the protocol was publicly available when I posted the
message (had I been, I don't suppose I would have asked Stuart the
question!) but a friendly & helpful list member has since mailed me a link
to the docs. (they are here:
http://www.crucible-technologies.com/developers-base.html if anyone is
interested)

Anyway, Adrian from Pathway Data has said he will provide a customised
version of ActiveCID for me to use with my plugin, which means I will be
able to share it.
