No tar only works with devices or files, well devices are files actually.
GNU Tar supports a directive to specify a compression program such as gzip
to preprocess the files before they are tared.

Subject: [ukha_d] Unix help needed
Sorry for the OT post but I am in need of
some Unix help.
I have got to tar and compress some files up
but they will not fit into
the new location until they are compressed
and they are too big to be
tared in location.
Basically can pipe a tar into a compress
ie
Tar blah.tar * compress
Is this possible?
Regards Ben
