I
have
W2k server connected with Alcatel ADSL modem ("frog") to the internet. I
use ICS
for sharing that connection throughout the lan. I am using (evaluating)
ZoneAlarm Pro at the moment and seems fine. I have all my data on that
server
too.
Now,
you convinced me that my configuration is not a best design, so I would
like to
have separate firewall.
However, all the solutions you describe is to put firewall between
LAN
and internet and while I understand how to connect the LAN side (RJ45 ->
Cat5
cable ->Swithch or hub) I don't know how to connect internet side.
If I
go for PC solution (ipcop or some windows solution), where should I plug my
second ethernet card to?
Because
of my space limits, I would prefer separate device because
it's
more compact. But still I don't know where to plug the ADSL modem
to.
It seems that there are some versions
which support USB modems, but how to upload drivers to such
device?
Do you have any
recommendation for such device, which will be appropriate for my
scenario?
I would also prefer something
that I
don't have to throw away if I upgrade from USB to ethernet
version of
ADSL. Does such devices exist?
If I decide to switch provider (currently BT
openworld), do I have to return them this modem. I asume I have. But, will
the
other provider charge me installation cost, taking into account that there
is no
need for engineer to visit me?
Regards,
Nik

Shuttle & via epia... now firewalls
Just
wanted to say I went fot option 2, using a linksys router. I have had no
problems with it.
Tried the linux firewall, but a combination of low
power, size, reliability (hardware rather than software) & easy
admin
(web based) swung me.
The
low end ones of these are probably less versatile than the linux ones, but
are
pretty sound & fine for SOHO use.
You
wouldn't one protecting your enterpirse, which is whe they are around £100
& Chekpoint 1 satrts around £3K.

Paul,
Your options are:
- A multi machine firewall with different OS'es and differentf
irewall software on each machine
-
A hardware router/firewall that plugs into your net connection at one end
and your lan at the other (a lot of these are also 4/8 port switches too -
eg draytek, smc)
-
A PC (even a $15 486) running IPCop or similar with 2 network cards in it -
one to connect to the net, the other to your lan.
-
A PC which runs firewall software AND stores your MP3's on it.
(Controversial -d epends on how valuable your data is)
Of
these, probably the $15 solution is the one many would recommend, though I
am happy with the hardware router/firewall solution. It means no big
noisy box in the corner drinking loads of electricity and (with the draytek
offerings for example) you can have VPN functionality built in, independent
of the OSes running on your PC's
HTH,
Tony
