As a software solution, I use ZoneAlarm (not the Pro version) on my 98SE box
from www.zonelabs.com
It's free for non-profit use, see
http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/catalog/products/zonealarm/znalm_detai
ls.jsp
(will probably wrap).

Would thoroughly recommend it (not that it's an issue to you, but I'm not
dubious of its compatibility with WinXP ever since a friend was having very
strange internet connection problems that magically disappeared when
ZoneAlarm was uninstalled.  Though I've seen no problems on several 98 / SE
/ ME installations.)

It monitors all incoming _and_ outgoing traffic (so no nasty spyware
programs can report back without your knowledge).  Permissions are set-up on
a program-by-program basis (the first time a program tries to access the
internet ZoneAlarm pops up a box asking what type of access you want to give
the proggie.

Subject: [ukha_d] OT Firewall for those in the Dark Ages of NET Access

Sorry to continue the firewall theme but I got a call this morning
from a relative on this topic (I am in the process of upgrading their
PC)

Can someone recommend a firewall that can be used with a dial up
internet connection, no additional linux boxes please!, is software
the only way forward??

If so is the Norton Software any good.

It will only need to protect one computer when it is on the net every
now and again, there will be a reasonably large ammount of sensitive
data on the computer, so paranoid people please step forward :-)

Thanx in advance

Paul.

P.S. They have a young kid so parental control would also be good
P.P.S Using 98Se
P.P.P.S This has to be simple and easy to setup and manage as they
are even less IT literate than me!
