Martin,

I would start by looking at which process or task is hogging the CPU
(if it is indeed a single one). Unfortunately (from what I can
remember of W98), the task manager (ctrl, alt, del) doesn't show you
which tasks are running and what cpu bandwidth they're utilising.

There are several shareware/freeware replacement task managers
around - have a look at:

http://nordcom.tucows.com/system/resource95.html

I've not used any of these but the one labeled 'Win9x/ME Task
Manager 1.0.7' looks like it could be worth a download (Tucows rate
it 5 stars).

Normally, finding out which task is hogging will give an indication
of where to look more deeply.

Paul.
