PC audio through hi-fi

Is it possible to take the headphone or speaker audio-out from a 
pc/laptop and plug it into a phono-in of an amplifier? Obviously this 
is to allow MP3 playback until I can find a neat shelf system with 
LAN access.

I don't have a phono-out on the laptop I'm planning to use and 
wondered what the downside to using the headphone out was?
