OT - periodic PC slowage

Sorry for the OT post, long term lurker at his wits end.  My 2 year old
Dell with W98SE has developed the habit of periodically running
unbelievably slow - mouse pointer moves at normal speed, but the machine
takes around 5 seconds to respond to a mouse click or key press.  System
monitor shows processor usage at 100% at these times (but then it does
that at other times as well when the machine is working fine).  Seems to
be triggered by anything that uses the modem - Explorer, Netscape and
Kazaa - and can only be fixed with the Big Red Button.

Its getting worse, and neither Dell nor that nice Mr Gates have any
useful ideas.  I've done all the defrag/scandisc/dump all the .tmp
files/clear out all the advertising search robots/etc. and my gast is
completely flabbered.  Any clues from the brains out there??

Thanks
Martin
