RE: [OT] [Possibly] WiFi WLAN update..

They’re divided into mils (6400 mils in as circle) I don’t know which ones you used but the Nato standard is divisions at 5 mil intervals.

Binocular with bearing could be a problem (it needs compass or gyro), but distance shouldn't be a problem.

Almost any military binocular has ticks (I don't know what the proper expression is) on it and it's used for determining distance.

You pick an object of known size (like door hight, or building size) and see how many "ticks" it fits. Each tick is 1meter over distance of 1,000 meters and then you need a bit of mathematics...

E.g.

if object is 1 meter wide and it fits 2 ticks, then the distance is 500 meters.

That's what they tought us...

For the serious distance kings amongst us ;)

We have confirmed that we have LOS between my house (NS784625 as it happens)
and my mate Scott's (NS658678) That's 13,920 metres away, on a bearing of
294 degrees.

I got this information (afte much mucking around with A supremely cool tool
I got from here..

http://www.bootsacrossscotland.org.uk/Site/Resources.html

takes two OSGB Grid References, and calculates distance and bearing...
well useful.

This chart I also found on my travels...

http://www.orinocowireless.com/upload/documents/Ranges.htm

which gives the sort of ranges you can expect with good atmospherics using
various Antenna powers.

These guys...

http://www.fab-corp.com/index.htm

sell parabolic grid 19dbi antennas for only $49.99 USD, and Orinoco pigtails
for $21-23 USD dependant on length.

I found myself *really* wanting a bit of sci-fi kit for this project.

A set of binoculars with a HUD, which displays the exact bearing you are
looking, like Luke Skywalker uses in Star Wars. A range finder would be nice
too.

:D

Ian.
