I've got a couple of different sorts - the ones which came with my
2.4GHz wireless sender are little square blocks with a self adhesive
side and the wire hanging out the bottom. The other ones which came with
Tivo are plastic sticks with a bare IR LED on the end of it, the wire is
then out the end of the plastic stick.

Letsautomate sell seperate IR emitters...
http://letsautomate.com/10063.cfm the Xantech Blink ones look like they
are the stick on the front of a device type, and the Smartlinc Blaster
seems more like the Tivo one but without an actual stick... just the
bare LED.

If you still have major problems, getting one of the Smartlinc Blasters
might help as it claims to flood an area of 4 feet, so could be a bit to
the side and give decent coverage I'd think.
