Domestic install or not if you get a lightning strike any where in the area
the induced pulse will fry things, running cables up the outside just adds
to the risk. If you have the opportunity to reduce that risk why not take
it, once its ripped through your network, PCs, HV and all the other goodies
how much will that cost you.
If you get a strike very close to the house then kiss goodbye the  lot, I
have seen alarm panels black like charcoal inside with the cables melted
together.
