If you are going to drill a small hole you can could use another method.

- Get a piece of fairly stiff piece of wire and bend it at right angles.
- Stick a pencil eraser on one end so that it point the same way as the
bend.
- Slide the wire up into the cavity at a slight angle until the whole of
the bent bit is in the roof.
- Then twist it round like you would with a TV aerial trying to get the
reception right.
- When it hits a joints mark the direction of the eraser on the ceiling.
- Spin it round the other way and do the same.
- Remove the wire then mark where the wire hit the joist using the
direction of eraser marks and the length of the bent part of the wire.
