Title: Message
I know there are a few WAP11 owners on the list so I hope this latest update is helpful.

There is a new firmware 1.4i1 here: http://www.linksys.com/download/firmware.asp?fwid=11
SNMP now works again.

With this new firmware installed I have also performed the power mod/hack. This does work!!! (is supposed to work with Netgear ME102 as well)
See here: http://www.seattlewireless.net/index.cgi/Wap11Hack NOTE: the first link for the Amtel utility ('download this') downloads a duff .exe. Use the other link.

This is also worth a look to: http://www.netstumbler.com/ try a 'before & after' you'll be surprised.

Another useful option in the Amtel config utility is the ability to turn off  SSID broadcasting. From a security point of view this is good. Don't forget to re-configure your clients if previously the ESSID was set to 'any'.

Justin.

P.S Arse around with your WAP11 at you own risk. Dont blame me if you break it etc.

After reading that something could be done about the "sleepy WAP" issue I downloaded and installed all new firmware and drivers for the WAP11 and my Orinoco Silver Card.  The once sleepy WAP/card is now the very wide awake wireless network.  It used to take anything between 10 seconds and a minute to get the two talking but now it takes maximum 4 or 5 seconds.

The linksys WAP11 has new firmware and SNMP config utility as well as a new USB config util.

The Orinoco cards have new drivers out 20/12/2001 and new firmware (I forget when that was released) but together they make for a truly gratifying ePods experience.

I can confirm that the latest firmware update 1.4h3 does indeed fix the 'sleepy WAP' issue. :-)

Others, preferring to stick with the older firmware (so as not to lose the SNMP config ability, I suppose), have found that pinging the access point every 10 mins or so also gets around the sleep problem.

I am waiting to hear back from Linksys about a fix for the SNMP issue.

Encouraged by the feedback on this list that wireless LAN's aren't just flaky, I have done some digging around...

It seems the Linksys WAP11 going to sleep is quite a common problem (unless you talk to Linksys support) and it supposed to  be fixed in firmware 14h3. I would have updated my firmware had I realised there was a newer version but if you look at the download page on the Linksys site the latest firmware is at the bottom of the page and I didn't think to look there (I know, I know!)

Note: It is not possible to use the SNMP config utility after upgrading to 14h3. The only problem with that is you wont be able to use a Mac address filtering as that is not configurable using USB.

I've not had the update installed that long, but I should know tomorrow if it *really* fixes the sleep problem.

A big thank you to Vince for the offer a WLAN card to assist with troubleshooting - *hopefully* I won't need it now :-)

Cheers,

Justin.

I don't think your card is playing up, mine is also an Orinoco Silver, I don't have WEP enabled but still have the same problem, let me know if you find a cure.

Thanks

I'm not using WEP either. I prefer the idea of hard coded MAC address access (and I couldn't get WEP to work anyway :-))

Maybe I need to buy another PCMCIA card to figure out if its the AP or Orinoco playing up.

Cheers,

Justin.

Are you using WEP?  MIne is turned off.
