I'm sorry Julian feels that way - but as you point out there are other ways to subscribe and the description of the list does point out the volume of traffic and the OT posts. 
 
I'm trying my best here...I'm running this this for the love of it - I have a real job too.  The volume of person emails I answer in a week trying to help people is getting huge.  The website had over 8000 hits in the first 8 days of this year.
 
The fact that the mailing list has transformed into a "community" is not my doing. But I'm glad.  People have made good friends here, people are visting each other in their homes, helping each other, organising meets etc.
 
Like I've said before...it's not possible to please all of the people all of the time.
