I managed to have mine changed to a sealed new unit today and I made sure
the box was sealed before taking it. It was the Basildon Powerhouse that
sold me the dodgy unit.
The first unit was obviously used with the power cable missing, other
cables in a coiled mess, carpet fibre stuck to the underside of the unit
and the remote was loaded with a set of flat batteries. Despite the
evidence, the sales person was still telling me over the phone that
"they've never had a returned TiVo" so I reluctantly accepted her
word.
However, I took the precaution of checking with TiVo Customer Service
quoting the service number and was told that the unit was registered to
someone since September 2001.
It must have been supremely stupid of Powerhouse to pass returned or used
TiVos off as unused. TiVo must be one of the very few products that, with
the service number, anyone can tell to the nearest day the unit was
effectively sold.
