I suppose the other way to "force" an upgrade is to ask someone
who has
2.5.5 for a copy of the 300MB backup they just made ... but restoring
would reset the unit to "virgin" state. Of course this is just
what
"fred" told me ;-)

Mike,

The only way I know how to do this is to phone TiVo customer services,
moan at them about the version 1.5 software glitches and ask to be put
on the priority list for the upgrade.  The TiVo V2 upgrade is happening
at the moment (started last week) and is planned to take 6 weeks to role
out to everyone. I know most of the priority list people have already
been upgraded.

I think you mentioned a way to force the tivo to upgrade to the new
software?
