I've not been following this thread but I have a couple of questions?

1) Is it compatible with NTL cable, if so how does it change the channel on
the NTL digibox?

There is an IR output on the front of the TiVo for controlling STBs, and
also two IR emitters on the end of a cable for same purpose (manual
recommends the wired emitters)

2) What happen if I'm watching one channel and it decides it wants to
record something on another one?

TiVo wins! (but the idea is that you load up TiVo with your choices and
don't watch live TV) You can bypass TiVo though - it can switch any other
source (eg DVD, or Terrestrial analogue TV) through to the Tv and still
record
