I fully agree with you on this Mark, Yahoo, while not perfect, is a
totally free service with some neat features. My opinion is that you get
nought for ought in this world and if a couple of irritating adverts
taking up a little bandwidth is all we have to worry about, well really,
I mean what is the problem here? It is oh so trivial and yet some folks
seem to find this highly irritating for some unknown reason, can I
suggest just ignoring the bloody things like I do!
Add to that Yahoo Groups are:
Accessible
Free
Reasonably fast (most of the time)
Easy to use
Personally I don't have a problem chipping in a few quid for a private
list, but it just doesn't work. Look at HA Buy, hardly used since its
inception and at the end of the day all those different lists on
different servers could easily become a nightmare to navigate and use,
especially if you change your mailing address as I did before using HA
Buy for the first time in months. I applaud the effort in doing this and
trying to appease the minority of vocal members that complain about OT
traffic, but as I have said before along with many others, most mail
clients I know of saw fit to leave a little button to delete things that
you are not interested in, just use it.
ATEOTD, the internet and the services on it have to be paid for by
someone it is not a totally free ride and if I have to ignore or delete
a couple of adds to get the fantastic debates, discussions and
information available FOR FREE on this list then I'm only too happy to
do so.
On a 56K modem it the longest it's taken me to download my mail from
Yahoo is a few minutes...not really a big hassle. So what if Yahoo tacks
on a couple of adds, big deal! I get some MPEG/jpg etc files I've seen a
number of times from various places and I think nothing of it, I really
do not think that download times is a relevant argument.
As for people unsubscribing...how many would have even dipped their toe
as it were had they had to pay for the service?
