The dimming of the screen is a power saving mode on alot of laptops, my
sisters tosh does did this till i told it not to.
Is the processor a speed step processor?  The power to it may of been
reduced to save power, and thus the Mhz has been reduced aswell, this could
explain that idle takes up 90%. Have a look in mycomputer, and see what the
processors running at, hmm cant do that on win98, but you can on xp, i
think, strange....

When you say running like a dog, do you mean it's slow, or you have noticed
90% usage on the processor?
What speed processor is in it?
