Another OT post...

I've got a Tosh Satt Pro 4300 that's been running like a dog for the past
couple
of months. I've done the usual clean-ups and defrags and flashed the BIOS,
but
the processor load is still averaging 90% at idle. It's got enough memory
(256mb) and is only running W98 with nothing else unusual. The HD is only
35%
full. Even when I manually shut everything down apart from Windows, the
processor load still runs at 90%. Oddly, the peaks in processor loads
coincide
with the main fan turning off and on - typically the fan stays on for about
5
secs, off for 5 secs, and carries on like this all day. just recently the
screen
has taken to dimming as well, even on mains supply.

Now my trusty desktop support boys want to sent it off with a hardware
fault,
but I really don't want to do that unless I have to, as I'll loose the
laptop
for x weeks, and most likely the contents of the HD. Anyone got any ideas?
 I'd
like to find an app similar to task manager in NT that shows the individual
tasks, but can't seem to find anything....

Thanks, Pete
