If he lamps do not hang straight down the filament will not be
supported
correctly and will fail prematurely.
High efficiency lamps are small fluorescents folded around and mounted on
a
base the same as a normal bulb, they will work in any orientation and
last
about 10 times longer, they also use a fraction of the electricity
which
offsets the initial cost of several pounds each. You can get them from
Argos
or Homebase. IIRC an 11 watt one is equivalent to a 60 watt bulb.
